Today, there are about 1800 full-time residents in Dawson City. In 1903, there were over 9,000 -- and many more in the environs. For example, we learned today that at a single claim, there was a small 'city' of 5,000 people. The town is nestled next to the Yukon River, the 3rd longest in North America after the Mississippi and McKenzie. The town is small enough to walk anywhere.
This is the city of Robert Service, Jack London, and Pierre Berton, and they are duly honoured by (among other things) street signs as you head up Dome Road to take a picture from this high (3000 ft) vantage point.
The town's sidewalks are boardwalks and the historical buildings must remain as they have been in the past except for the paint colour. As you'll see, some are a little ramshackle but it lends ambience to the place. Here are some cityscapes.
This building immediately above was a CIBC and is the bank within which Robert Service was a clerk. How I'd love to fix it up!
