Whitehorse!

"That's it Mr. Frodo -- if I take one more step, I'll be farther [north] from home than I've ever been!"  Thankfully, we had an uneventful trip with the exception of trying to get to Pearson from the Royal York by bus on a Friday afternoon.  After too long a wait, we shared a cab with some Dutch tourists and had no problem at all with a friendly and helpful driver.

It's exciting being in Whitehorse.  I don't think that either of us really appreciated the fact that Whitehorse is west of Vancouver.  We've never been in an airport before which has two stuffed caribou on the top of the baggage claim carousel.  In the Yukon, there are 70,000 moose and 34,000 people.

The town is -- well if the town were a book, we'd call it a bit dog-eared. Richard is reminded of St. John.  But it has its charms.  The statue has the remarkable caption:  "This statue is dedicated to all those who follow their dreams." The Yukon River is fast moving and you wouldn't want to canoe in it without knowing what you're doing and taking some care.  The picture of Richard here was taken last night at 10:30 p.m.  Here's a picture of Main St.

This morning we drove all the way south to the Canadian border but did not want to drive into the US as far as Skagway.  The scenery is spectacular, Carcross (formerly Caribou Crossing) is charming and we are reminded of the amazing history of the area constantly.  Carcross was at the 'top' of the White Pass and where the Stampeders finally emerged and then built boats on Lake Bennett to then go north by water after their arduous journey.  Here is a selection of photos from the trip south.  (It looks like I have to post another blog to show more photos as there seems to be a limit.)
