Bonanza Creek

Bonanza Creek is where it all began, with the so-called 'Discovery Claim'.  The creekside road and area is now operated by Canada Parks. But it still provides opportunity, that is, entreprenurial opportunity, as we saw when we stopped at Claim 33 which is now a small store and a showcase for every manner of rusty junk that was left behind -- and not just here but scattered over the region.

Down the same road is Dredge No. 4.  It's hard to describe how gigantic this behemoth is.

As we marvelled at how, in the early 20th century, this kind of structure could have been assembled in the Yukon, Richard's sharp eyes caught sight of a black bear lumbering across the road.  With the exception of some birds and a porcupine, this is the first wild animal we've encountered.
